Question: Why do high school aged students with an interest in natural resources, conservation or the environment have a bigger reason than ever to participate in the Maryland Envirothon this Spring?
Answer: Because more scholarships are available to students interested in these topics than ever before through the Canon Envirothon.
The top-scoring team from the Maryland Envirothon, to be held June 19/21 at The University of Maryland – Eastern Shore will compete with winning teams from across North America for more than $100,000 in scholarships at this summer’s Canon Envirothon, July 29 – August 4 in Geneva, New York.
The Envirothon is a team-based outdoor academic competition which challenges high school students’ knowledge of soils and land use, forestry, aquatic ecology, wildlife and a current environmental issue, which is chosen by the hosting state or province. New York has chosen Alternative/Renewable Energy for the 2007 program. An Envirothon team consists of five students, all from the same high school or other organization.
Canon Envirothon scholarships totaling $107,500 will be awarded to each student on a team, as follows: 1st place $5,000; 2nd place - $4,000; 3rd place - $3,000; 4th place – $2,000; 5th place - $1,500; 6th place - $1,400; 7th place - $1,300; 8th place - $1,200; 9th place $1,100; and 10th place - $1,000. Scholarships are paid directly to the student’s learning institution of choice, and may be applied toward any academic interest. Students and advisors of winning teams placing 11th – 15th will receive Canon products.
The Canon Envirothon Committee voted to expand the scholarship program during its winter business meeting last week. Scholarships totaling $75,000 were previously awarded to students finishing in 1st-5th place.
