

Pete Cruikshank was awarded the President's
Award by Cal Stuart, on behalf of President
Robert Wilson at the MASCD Annual meeting in July.
President Robert Wilson outlined the accomplishments of retiring District Manager Alan "Pete" Cruikshak as he awarded him with the MASCD's Presidents award. He noted that Pete Cruikshank exemplifies the goals of the Tributary Strategy Teams and has worked for over three decades to support and implement the habitat and nutrient reduction actions now called for in the new Chesapeake Bay agreement.
In 1995, Pete was appointed by Governor Parris N. Glendening to serve on the Lower Potomac Tributary Strategy Team making him a charter member. Pet is responsible for organizing numerous environmental outreach and educational projects that focus on stream health and Chesapeake Bay awareness throughout Charles County.
As a life-long resident of Charles County, Pete attended local private and public schools and graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park.
He served in the US Army with the 2nd Battalion 11th artillery, 101st Airborne Division in the Republic of Vietnam and was awarded the army Commendation Metal and Bronze star metal.
Cruikshank previously worked as a construction inspector with the Maryland Highway Administration and as a site inspector and later as a supervisor of building Inspectors for the Prince George's County department of licenses and permits. Since 1973, Pete has served as the District Manager for the Charles Soil Conservation District.
He has worked closely with the Southern Maryland Building industry Association through the Charles County Liaison Committee, the Charles County storm Water Management Task Force and numerous other work groups, boards and committees.
A former chairman of the Charles County Forestry Task Force, he has also served as principal staff to Charles County Ag Land Preservation Advisory Board for many years and has assisted with Gilbert Run public Watershed Association over an extended period.
Cruikshak has also served as principal staff to several standing committees of the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts, Inc., including the Information and Education Committee which administers the Associations Grant program, the Water Resources Committee and currently, the Technical Committee.
Pete Cruikshank retired in August 2004 after more than 30 years with the Charles Soil Conservation District. We wish Pete well in his retirement.
