Outstanding Cooperator - Richard W. Catterton, Anne Arundel SCD

The farm on Harwood road has been in the Catterton Family for over 45 years. The farm was initially set up by Herbert Catterton Jr., raising Black Angus feeder cows and was incorporated in 1987 becoming Progressive Farm, Inc. The day-to-day farming activities have been turned over to Richard Catterton, III. Rick Catterton’s farming operation consists of 156 acres which make up the home farm and another 1000 acres that are rented throughout the county.

The services of Chesapeake Land Management are being used to establish Nutrient Management plans on Rick’s operation. He has taken the NM concept one step further by sampling his fields for ph monitoring every year and micronutrient testing every three years. Global positioning maps have been created on farms that Phosphorus site indexing has been done. All of these practices have been an added expense, but a benefit in the long run.

For the past two years, Rick Catterton has been participating in the poultry litter transport program to utilize poultry litter from areas of the Eastern Shore . He uses No-Till farming practices, Residue Management, Cover Crops, Conservation Tillage, and Field Strip Cropping to be a better manager of the land.

Rick Catterton saw that there was a need to include No-Till rippers in the MD Income Tax Deduction. Rick found out the hard way that they were not included in the deduction. He was told that it wasn’t included in the tax credit and could only be included if a bill was brought forward. Rick saw the need and worked on what was needed with the help of the Anne Arundel SCD to get things started of Delegate Baldwin to support the bill and Rick went before the House and testified to add No-Till Rippers to the list of eligible Conservation Tillage equipment that was eligible for a tax credit.

Bob Wilson thanked Richard for making a difference so buyers today of No-Till rippers can receive a tax credit.
