Outstanding Cooperator - Richard W. Catterton, Anne Arundel SCD
The farm on Harwood road has been in the Catterton Family
for over 45 years. The farm was initially set up by Herbert Catterton Jr.,
raising Black Angus feeder cows and was incorporated in 1987 becoming
Progressive Farm, Inc. The day-to-day farming activities have been turned over
to Richard Catterton, III. Rick Catterton’s farming operation consists of 156
acres which make up the home farm and another 1000 acres that are rented
throughout the county.
The services of Chesapeake Land Management are being used
to establish Nutrient Management plans on Rick’s operation. He has taken the
NM concept one step further by sampling his fields for ph monitoring every year
and micronutrient testing every three years. Global positioning maps have been
created on farms that Phosphorus site indexing has been done. All of these
practices have been an added expense, but a benefit in the long run.
For the past two years, Rick Catterton has been
participating in the poultry litter transport program to utilize poultry litter
from areas of the
Rick Catterton saw that there was a need to include No-Till
rippers in the MD Income Tax Deduction. Rick found out the hard way that they
were not included in the deduction. He was told that it wasn’t included in the
tax credit and could only be included if a bill was brought forward. Rick saw
the need and worked on what was needed with the help of the Anne Arundel SCD to
get things started of Delegate Baldwin to support the bill and Rick went before
the House and testified to add No-Till Rippers to the list of eligible
Conservation Tillage equipment that was eligible for a tax credit.
Bob Wilson thanked Richard for making a difference so buyers today of No-Till rippers can receive a tax credit.
