COVER CROP PROGRAM   To reduce the leaching of excess crop nutrients into groundwater during the fall and winter months, the Maryland Department of Agriculture has an annual cover crop program.  Cover crops immobilize unused nitrogen from the root zone and reduce erosion.  Click here to see program incentives and guidelines for this year.

BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMPs) Designed to increase farm productivity, reduce soil erosion and protect water quality, these take into consideration the natural resources on your farm. Click here to view a pdf of the brochure entitled Conservation Choices.   This guide explains how each bmp works to suit your conservation needs.  Keep in mind that if you qualify, some of these practices may be cost-shareable.
COST SHARE                                                Are you interested in installing best management practices? They may be cost-shareable!  If you have an existing water quality problem, and would like some advice on what best management practices would be most effective on your farm, please click here to send an e-mail to one of our ag. staff.

CONSERVATION PLANS One of the primary functions of the District's ag. department is to write Soil and Water Quality Conservation Plans (conservation plans) for farmers and landowners.  These conservation plans utilize best management practices to manage and protect land and water quality while optimizing productivity.  Although these plans aren't mandatory, some programs, such as the Baltimore County Ag. Land Preservation program, require them.

If you are interested in having a conservation plan written for your farm or property, click here to request a meeting with one of our ag. staff.

NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT
As a result of 1998 legislation and the   Water Quality Improvement Act, all Maryland farmers grossing $2,500 or more annually or raising 8,000 pounds or more of live animal weight are required to run their operations using a nutrient management plan that addresses both nitrogen and phosphorus inputs

But this far-reaching legislation also touches a number of other interests, including people who apply nutrients, poultry growers and companies, and Maryland-certified nutrient management consultants, who must now begin writing nutrient management plans based on both soil nitrogen and phosphorus.

Currently, there is no cost-sharing available from MDA for nutrient management plans.
